Looking back on five years of Whisky & Wildcards

Did you know Whisky & Wildcards is five years old already? I have to admit that I totally missed our anniversary in September. I hadn’t expected the project to be running for so long already, but I’m pretty excited that we’re still going after five years! I figured this might be a good opportunity to look back on the podcast so far and talk about our plans for the podcast.

We started back in 2020 with the idea of reviewing Savage Worlds products, especially smaller ones that people weren’t aware of yet. We didn’t focus on publishing an episode as close as possible to the release of the product which made me worry that it made the podcast less helpful for authors and readers. However, we got very nice feedback from both groups about it, which was and still is very motivating for me. I hadn’t expected how much the podcast would enable us to connect to people when we started it!

After five episodes, I wrote about planning to switch our creation process to be able to better review longer books and release new episodes faster. Truth be told – we never really did, as you might be able to guess by our release pace. Since we don’t run a Patreon or try to build a brand, we probably don’t need to regularly publish a lot of episodes, but I think it’s worth another try to change up our process a bit. I still very much enjoy the open and comfortable way of our discussions, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to limit the amount of recorded audio that has to be edited.

One thing I’m currently slightly unsure of is the community aspect. Does every podcast need its own community? I see this podcast more like a product emerging out of the already existing Savage Worlds community, and up until a few months ago folks could just talk with Manu and me on the Discord spaces where most of the listeners seemed to hang out anyway. Because of that, it was no big surprise to me that the Whisky & Wildcards Discord space saw comparably little action. The situation has changed a bit now with Manu not being involved with Savage Worlds anymore for the time being and me leaving Discord. For me, e-mail and our chatroom are fine, but what about you? If you think there’s a kind of online space were Whisky & Wildcards should be present, let me know!

Until then – to more episodes, great books and tasty whiskies!

New logo

As you might have noticed, we got a new logo! Kerstin made it for us after being bribed with a lifelong* whisky supply.

I hope you like the logo as much as we do. Thanks, Kerstin!

*referring to the life of the podcast. So… possibly inheritable?

Can I spend my Advance on “Podcasting” now?

Hey folks! Now that the next full episode is finally out, I’d like to get you informed on what’s going on behind the scenes at our podcast.

First of all, I know I wrote about how we’d like to review bigger publications. Now we reviewed another Jump Start, though. We actually fell so far behind with our progress that we feared a long review would postpone the next episode even more, so we threw in a shorter publication. Sorry for that. We still plan to review a full setting, though!

But as our process showed, we need to change our way of producing the podcast quite a bit. It took more than a month from starting to read it until the episode got out. The edited show about it is more than an hour – and that’s for a Jump Start. You can probably see that this doesn’t scale well if we carry on like this for settings with 200+ pages.

Don’t worry – we’re not going to script the whole episode and put some generic music under it while we’re reading our lines. But we’re planning to switch up our production process so we spend less time rambling and editing (so we can spend more time playing and drinking).

Until then, have fun with our new episode, let us know what you think about it or what you’d like to have reviewed – we love to hear from you!

Happy Holidays!

We’d like to wish all our listeners happy holidays, no matter what you celebrate. Enjoy the celebrations (as unusual as they might be with social distancing), spend time with your loved ones (even if it’s just via video chat) and look forward to the next year – because the next episode from us won’t be out before 2021!

To give you at least a bit of info about it: After reviewing shorter publications, we’d like to step it up and make our next episode about a thicker book than before. Of course, that’ll take a bit more time if we want to make a meaningful review about it – hence the waiting time.
